A neighborhood restaurant that tries very hard to please and succeeds nicely.
Much better than most Upper East Side Italians. Menu is more sophisticated and the price seems fair.
Alloro is a true gem with a skilled nuovo Roman sensibility. Its owner/chef crafts seasonal menus of remarkably well-balanced, subtle, and inventive takes on standards that are not at all standard. The surprising 10, 20, 30 salad and the orecchiette with anchovies were spectacular, the pork belly was sinfully succulent, and the monkfish dusted with prosciutto dust (yeah!) had amazing depth. The deconstructed strudel was a delectable stretch!
The food was good, however, there is very little value. Portions are tiny and food is not in any way extraordinary. Descriptions of entrees make them appear to be inventive, but they certainly are not. The veal meat balls and braised pork belly were good, but served simply with broccoli rabe and fried mozzarella. he steak was well prepared, but again standard fare. If you are looking for intriguing food and value - this isn't the place.
We keep going back to Alloro for the marvelous food and friendly service. Great pastas, inventive takes like the revisited eggplant parmasan, wonderful main courses and yummy deserts .My husband said it was the best squid ink pasta he's ever tasted Wine by the glass a real bargain Service helpful, friendly and unrushed. The dining rooom is bland, but the food exciting .Extraordinary food in ordinary surroundings
