It may be because my first introduction to Italian beef was Portillo's, but I didn't enjoy the beef at Al's on Wells and Ontario. The gravy didn't taste quite right, and the entire meal of a beef and fries was greasy instead of flavorful. I'd recommend passing on Al's and walking two blocks over to Portillo's to satisfy your Chicago street food craving.

Excellent (and award-winning) italian Beef & Sausage. Drive-thru, plus a few tables inside. Do not confuse this original second location with the imitations that are the franchises... this location (and the original one on Taylor St.) have it right, while the franchise spots now scattered around Chicagoland only serve an adequate sandwich.
