The French toast was made with normal wonder bread, rather than the kind of thick bread it tastes best on, but it was edible. The sausage links looked so vile and sickly that I couldn’t bring myself to cut into them. When I went to pay, I noticed that the waitress, who was an Ethiopian immigrant, charged me the full price for the sausages, despite the fact that I didn’t touch them and sent them back promptly. After a couple minutes of discussion, she said, “OK- fine, you win, I give you 10% discount on the sausages!”
10% in this case worked out to 35 cents. Now I rarely send back food at restaurants- and I’ve eaten out on a weekly basis for the last 20 years- but I don’t think I’ve ever been charged for food I sent back before. I told her that there was no chance I was paying for the sausages. She became irate and started yelling at me.
“YOU JUST WANT TO COME IN AND GET FREE FOOD! WE’RE NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU FREE FOOD!”
