For a joint called Cafe Absinthe, they were lacking in one major department... Absinthe. Our well-meaning bartendress went out of her way to explain that most people don't tend to like it once they have it. (Well, most of us don't grow up loving licorice quite like they do in France). She did offer to make us some fine concoctions however, which we greatly enjoyed while gnoshing.
Great restaurant, great food. Not conversation friendly and always too crowded. Not a romantic place with strangers sitting so close you can hear their conversations. Not always welcomed.
I think this place is overlooked. It is secluded, but a good vibe. Food is clever and tasty.
I've had the opportunity to visit some of Chicago's top restaurants (Tru, L20, Spring, MK, Spiaggia) and Cafe Absinthe is without-a-doubt in my Top 5. It might not be the level of elegance of a Tru, but the food is well-executed, creative, and delicious. Our service was fantastic (we were waited on by the long time GM) and perfectly attentive. My girlfriend and I were here on a date, and although a bit loud, the ambiance was dark, warm & romantic
Hip cafe with nice atmosphere and excellent dishes
