The place shut down in January 2010 so my comment is worthless but I do have to agree with the comment right below. The food was mediocre; lacked any of the oomph of real Hungarian spices. It was a watered down version for the masses without any imagination. Service was so incredibly poor, though the owners fawned all over the regulars. I took my non-Hungarian wife to show off my heritage and had to apologize to her after this experience.
As a born and raised Hungarian, I can certainly state that the food at Caterina's is mediocre and if you are not a "regular", the service is non existant at best and poor when present. Many of the items on the menu and wine list were not available on a recent visit.Save your money and taste buds; Andre's Cafe at 2nd Ave and 85th St has much better (i.e. really good authentic) Hungarian food and wonderful desserts and for a lot less.
Very fun place to eat. Authentic Hungarian food and Italian food. Menu history: two restauranteurs fall in love and merge restaurants: an Italian one, and a Hungarian one. Piano music nightly, and on many occasions former Broadway performers step up to the mike and sing. You never know what may happen on a given evening. The hostess Katarina is charming, and you feel like she has invited you into her home for a good cooked meal. Try it!
A very interesting restaurant. This is the ONLY restaurant in New York City serving Hungarian Cuisine -and it is fantastic. The menu is both Hungarian and Italian. They also have live music nightly and on Friday and Saturday night the amazing Jerry Scott is on the piano. If you like good food and a lively cabaret venue you will enjoy Caterina's. Your hosts, Caterina and Tom will make you feel so welcome. Now also serving Sunday Brunch!!!
It is always a fun filled night spent at Caterina's. The food is great, the piano music in wonderful and everyone has a good time singing along, especiallyafter a few "good" drinks! It's a guaranteed fun night.
