Historical and very special. They have egg creams, make their own chocolate for holidays, make their own ice cream in the basement, and make fresh Butter Scotch.
Upon entering, the musty smell in the front of the place practically forced us out; old can mean quaint, but it shouldn't mean ratty. Our pasta was fine, but a "Spanish" salad we ordered was inedible. Sure, the homemade ice cream is a treat, as are the old-timey serving dishes and the counter - but this is a place that's certainly resting on its laurels. Don't believe everything you see on TV.
Don't let the ice cream parlor appearance fool you; This place serves GREAT food! The lemonade is outstanding, served in old-fashioned glasses. The french fries are to die for. The salads (esp. the Nicoise) have ultra-fresh ingredients (as does all food prepared here. The creativity of the entree menu is unusual since you feel like you are in a malt shop.
This place is so unique. I grew up in Willie Park and have been going to Hildebrandt's all my life. Still have family in the area, so I get up there once or twice a year and Hildy's is always on the itinerary. It never disappoints. Great American food. Especially the burgers, fries and malts. I hope it never changes.
Hate to share you with the whole world on Triple D, but congratulations anyway. You're gonna be a star! Save me a seat at the counter. Can't wait for the chocolate Easter bunnies. They are the best anywhere.
