Go there all the time. Absolutely the best Chinese Restaurant in Chicago. Try the Salt and Pepper Lobster, the Walnut Shrimp and the Pike/Bass in black bean sauce...plus any traditional hunan dish.
An elegant Chinatown sleeper -- a "sleeper" only because it's a longer walk from the big Cermak-Wentworth parking lot. This is a fave of the folks in the Chinese consulate, and they know freshness, authenticity and quality. Generously portioned lunches are a bargain. Only flaw: Sometimes the servers struggle with English -- but that happens in Beijing, too.
Anytime I go to a Chinese restaurant that actually still uses MSG, I know I'm in trouble. Somehow, the use of MSG goes hand in hand with creamy thick salty sauces that get poured all over the food. Why, in the year 2010, is anyone still cooking with MSG? Yes, you can ask them not to use it, but why should anyone have to. You could also ask for food that doesn't suck, but I shouldn't have to.
Good Chinese food in the area. Family recommendation.
Good Chinese food in a low key environment. Don't expect too much service, but the food is consistent.
