overrated & we were underwhelmed. Too fancy, trying too hard. The food should and was not the main focus. It is more about the decor than the food. Poorly seasoned flat food.
This restaurant blew me away. Every detail from when you enter is meticulously curated to ensure an out of this world experience at this James Beard Award semifinalist for "Best New Restaurant." From barrel-aged cocktails to tableside Absinthe service, whole-roasted truffle butter chicken and bacon biscuits. Come in the summer and grab a fire pit outdoors with a glass of bourbon!
So much potential. I so wanted to love it. And yet: the spectacular setting (a collection of 19th century-inspired, luxe chambres in a historic adobe) fails to overcome an erratic menu with no stand-out dishes and a too-effete wine list. Plenty of style; not enough substance. One glaring exception: the desserts are fresh, creative, complex and downright delicious. Worth a trip for those alone.
Must have been a 5-second Per Se alum. Surly & uninformed servers. Great pork chop, Mac & Cheese. Best to skip the 45-min truffle chicken, after missing my appetizer, wine, and water order. Doesn't warrant a return visit. Bar neighbors waited over an 1 hr past reservation, others commented such a beautiful spot and horrible service. The BUSBOY was the man for us...he deserved all the tips.
After living in Monterey area for 35 years, we have seen many restaurants fill this location. However, none have reached the pinnacle of gastronomic pleasure as 1833. It is our favorite in the entire Monterey area... I cannot give it enough praise. I have gone their for my Anniversary, Valentine's, and birthday.
