I was literally blown away. Made my top 5 favorite restaurants in Chicago. Came here with a Groupon, but will be coming back over and over. Everything we had was fabulous.
Very noisy, cramped, in both dining rooms. Service mostly very good. We tried the crudo (a little underseasoned but the fish was good), beef tataki (excellent), the scallops and soba gnocchi (amazing), the veal loin (also amazing), and the shortrib / pork belly (not so good, both meats were dried out). I liked the cocktails but found the wine list obscure, though inexpensive. I see Takashi's talent, but his kitchen let him down. NotsureIllgoback.
I've eaten at Takashi 3 times and have been consistently disappointed. My 1st and 2nd meals were mediocre at best and I decided never to come back. Then a friend who is (was?) a big Takashi fan convinced me to try again. We ordered the tasting menu to get their best dishes. The flavors were way off on several dishes and we both agreed that it was a legitimately bad meal (worse than mediocre). I am shocked that it's retained its ratings/star.
It is a decent restaurant, but I was expecting something more given the high ratings in Zagat. The food is decent, but not excellent. The chef tries to fuse French dishes with an oriental twist - no easy task, and not always end up with the best result. Its Trio (pâté), Chicken Pot and Duck Breast are acceptable, but not fom the best produce or ingredients. Washugu Beef and Foie Goie outshined other dishes that night. Limited wine selection.
Exquisite, innovative food, excellent service, warm environment. Definitely a nice place to spend an evening out.
