A place to bring your romantic date in town for some interestingly concocted cocktails. A beautiful place located in a hole-in-the-wall painted like a gigantic white whale in the front with no sign, there are some high-tail booths and tables on the inside with little tiny candles that make the menus hard to see but the ambience dark and romantic, and semi-private. Beautiful.
It's really cocktail bar setup as prohibition era hangout. It has wide variety of drinks and they are masterfully prepared.
Food is not so good, but it's a drinking hole, not a gourmet dinner place.
You may find it difficult to find this speakeasy - only a small yellow light above the door notifies that you are in the correct location, but it's worth the challenge! The atmosphere is romantic. The drinks are by far the best in the city, using organic, homemade ingredients, and all drinks cost $12. They do not serve dinner, so go for appetizers and dessert. Go early & request a seat at the bar so you can watch the bartenders work their magic.
The food (light snacks) is decent, but it's the drinks at this cocktail bar in Wicker Park that merit a trip - the best in the city, bar none. The wait (no reservations accepted) can be prohibitive at busy times, but the experience is worth it. I have been several times and have never received a drink that was anything short of excellent.
