Fourth Avenue and Douglass still feels a little like the outback, so this Australian place is an entirely appropriate presence in the neighborhood. A friendly all-ages vibe, some fine tattoos on the staff, excellent beer, and perfectly serviceable, occasionally exceptional food make this an excellent neighborhood option.

In the sense that SoHo is a giant shopping mall, I Tre Merli is a decent shopping-mall restaurant: well-located, serving passable food and staffed by inept, but sweet and well-meaning youngsters.

There's a mad genius in the kitchen combining tastes in weird, unexpected, and often successful ways. A passel of big tables, great for groups, at the center of the 2-level space makes a crazy din in the pretty room. Generally indifferent service, and small portions that accrue to a whopping bill make this place a middling value and not as much of a delight as it could be.

Just like you hardly notice new wrinkles on an old friend, you only notice for a second that the decor here is looking a little faded. Then you're swept into the warm embrace of the staff and the succession of wonderful dishes from the chef. For a magical two hours, the place is a world unto itself.
