I've been going to Elements (formerly John Gardiner's Tennis Ranch) for over fifty years. One of the best bars in town and one of the worst restaurants. I didn't complain but the dinner was so bad last night that the waiter offered to not charge me for it. "Rare duck" was well done and tough and vegetables were awful. The ambience of the restaurant has always been spectacular as is the view but we need a new staff in the kitchen.
There is a reason the views are mentioned more often than the food. Expect gorgeous mountain and valley views but the food does not match the views. Attempts at fusion dishes failed bland flavors and other elements that detracted despite slick presentations. Shrimp and grits with chorizo suffered with shrimp coated in a crunchy seasoning you'd expect at a chain. Drinks were done well and wine list offers a very good, but limited selection.
The first thing that impresses is the spectacular view of the mountains and the surrounding city lights at night. The meals and service are consistent in their quality, and the wine list will satisfy an oenphile. Beware of the mechinal speed trap (which works at night on McDonald Drive. The speed limit goes from 35 to 25 M.P.H. and it is hard to see the posted speed limit in the dark before it is too late.
a profoundly talented chef and a beautiful view plus courteous attentive table service...now add a drop dead bar and bartenders you can't lose eating here.
Fancy-shmancy and not all that great. The fabulous view accounts for a third of the price. Certainly an elegant place when compared to tohers. Recommended. Reservations required.Ask for a window table, but beware of the setting sun .
