Best Thing We Ate: Tradestone Confections

Chocolates are high on our list of favorite things, so we were excited to get our first taste of the sweets from just-launched Tradestone Confections. A partnership between Chip Roman (Blackfish, Mica, Ela) and former Lacroix pastry chef Fred Ortega, the confectionary’s online store is now live and accepting orders for holiday delivery.

If there’s a chocolate lover in your life, a Tradestone box could make an extra-special gift, because the flavors you’ll find inside are unique and unusual. The website claims the sweets show “a chef’s flair and creativity” and after sampling we have to agree.

We’ve never before run into a pistachio-citrus truffle, for example, or had our palate be as pleased and confused at the same time as it was after a bite of the green-and-gold flecked maple-passion fruit nugget. The hazelnut crunch truffle was a perfect mix of creamy and crunchy, with an intense nutty flavor.

Tradestone Confections also offers caramels, macarons, barks and pates de fruits. The sweets are currently available at Night Kitchen Bakery in Chestnut Hill. Soon, Tradestone Cafe will open next to Blackfish in Conshohocken, providing a physical home for the chocolates as well as coffee, pastries and sandwiches.
