Cinco de Mayo is around the corner, but that doesn't have to mean another margarita. Put a twist on Mexico's favorite liquor at these bars serving innovative tequila-based cocktails.

Lei Low

The devil is in the tequila with El Diablo, the recipe for which dates back to Trader Vic’s Book of Food and Drink published in 1946. Tequila, lime and blackberry brandy are combined with ginger beer and served over crushed ice. The sophisticated blend of fruit and spice balance with the peppery notes of the tequila.

The Pastry War

The light and refreshing Bala de Cañón is perfect for summer. Blanco tequila, cantaloupe purée, honey and lemon are shaken and strained into a Mexican tumbler with ice. A garnish of two cantaloupe balls on a skewer, plus a sprinkle of chia seeds, adds the finishing touch.

Mongoose versus Cobra

The perfect place to kick back and grab a drink, this modern industrial, casual bar offers a cool vibe and solid selection of craft beer and cocktails. The Heritage is made with tequila blanco, Lillet French aperitif wine, and Aperol, a unique mix of herbs and roots. It's tart and fruity with just a touch of sweet.

Latin Bites

Making a good drink requires care, and Latin Bites hits a homerun with the lusty Sangre de Toro (“bull's blood” in Spanish). The fruity flavors of fresh strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and orange-flavored Grand Marnier liqueur bring out the best of Don Julio Reposado tequila, which provides a rich, smooth finish.

Reserve 101

Downtown's Reserve 101 offers a selection of over 300 whiskeys, and a can't-miss tequila cocktail with a literary twist. The Tequila Mockingbird is a mix of Dulce Vida blanco tequila, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, simple syrup, lime juice and cucumber. Hibiscus Liqueur adds depth with rich flavors of fruit, flowers and cane sugar.

The Down By the Beach summertime cocktail is bold in taste, made with Don Julio blanco tequila, lime juice, simple and ginger syrups, and a splash of pineapple juice.

1919 Wine & Mixology

The Blind Pig at 1919 Wine & Mixology is a blend of Circulo Reposado tequila, Jasmine liqueur and apple-baked bitters. This aromatic concoction offers an overall taste of deliciously sweet-tart baked apples.
