The long wait for Whole Foods Market Brooklyn is almost at an end. The many-years-in-the-making, Superfund-adjacent Gowanus location is set to open on December 17. Borough President Marty Markowitz will lead a bread-breaking ceremony at 8:15 AM, and at 9 AM, the doors to the 50,000-plus square food store will swing open. Early risers will be rewarded; the first 250 shoppers will receive a complimentary tote bag. The store will have many features unique to the Gowanus location, including a 20,000 square foot greenhouse (run in partnership with Gotham Greens), an indoor-outdoor restaurant and beer garden called The Roof, frozen pizzas from Roberta's and an outpost of avant-garde noodle joint Yuji Ramen. Even more novel: The immense parking lot, soon to be filled with a flood of Subaru Outbacks. The store's regular hours of operation are 8 AM to 11 PM daily.
