The gist: Made Nice, the long-awaited fast-casual concept from chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara of The NoMad and Eleven Madison Park (recently ranked number 1 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2017), makes its debut around the corner from The NoMad Hotel on Monday, April 24. The focus is accessibility and convenience without sacrificing technical complexity and of course, hospitality. Inspired by jazz musician Jon Batiste’s “social music,” the team seeks to create a community through food and hospitality.
The food: Composed dishes showcasing quality ingredients and finesse in basic techniques draw from and build upon the team’s signature recipes that have been perfected over decades. Look for mains like curry cauliflower (pictured below), a cauliflower stew with tofu, couscous, coconut and lemongrass; cod Provencal (pictured below), featuring seared cod, chickpea purée and braised fennel; and salmon rosti (pictured above), a frisée salad topped with smoked salmon, soft boiled egg, potato croutons and buttermilk vinaigrette (all priced between $11-$15). For sides, there’s garlic rolls with garlic butter and parmesan streusel and chicken veloute with poached chicken and crispy skin, plus a milk and honey dessert featuring milk ice cream, honey brittle, milk meringue and buckwheat honey.
The drinks: Housemade sodas with flavors like Cran Fizz (cranberry and ginger), Citrus Crush (grapefruit, orange and yuzu) and Coffee Soda (cold brew and cocoa nibs) will be offered alongside a pared down selection of wine and beer on tap.
The space: A colorful floor-to-ceiling mural by contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey adds a burst of color to the otherwise minimal space with limited seating. The open kitchen is lined with white subway tile and features a custom spice rack designed in collaboration with OXO.
The details: 8 W 28th St.; 212-887-1677; Open Monday to Saturday 11AM–10PM, closed Sunday. madenicenyc.com
