The gist: After slinging tacos at La Esquina and the now-shuttered La Cenita, chef Akhtar Nawab has joined up with Matt Wagman and David Albiero to debut a Mexican stand inside Gotham West Market.
The space: Drawing from the country's bustling outdoor marketplaces, the space is decorated with claypots and colorful glass vessels.
The food: The menu is inspired by items sold from food stands in northern Mexico, such as tortas, burritos and salads. Diners can customize their selections with a variety of proteins, including citrus-roasted chicken, spicy chorizo and fish with pickled cabbage. Choose from three types of ceviche, like mahi mahi marinated in passion fruit, aji amarillo and poblano peppers or shrimp and grouper tossed with avocado, tomato and serrano peppers. They'll also be serving breakfast items like baked eggs served with queso fresco and pico de gallo and tamales topped with poached eggs.
The drinks: Along with the usual taqueria sips of agua fresca, Jarritos and Mexican Coke, there's a juice bar where you can get a selection of fruits and vegetables (kale, beets, oranges, pineapple).
