The whiskey experts behind Seven Grand have gotten even more serious with Bar Jackalope, a new speakeasy-type backroom bar inside the Downtown LA bar. Like Varnish, which Cedd Moses and 213 Nightlife opened inside Cole's, you have to know about the bar to get in; otherwise it's just another door in the French Dip restaurant. Unlike Varnish, however, Bar Jackalope has its own entrance - just look for a light switch button to get in and not a door handle. Once pressed, you'll get instructions in both English and Japanese (the concept is based on Japanese whiskey bars).
As expected, whiskey is the king. There are more than 120 different American bourbons and ryes, Scotch and Japanese whiskies, including many rare and cult brands like Pappy Van Winkle, Balvenie Tun 1401 and Four Roses Limited Edition Release. Sip them neat, with fancy ice or try in Manhattans, Old Fashioned or the one bespoke offering of the night. Premium Japanese beers are also available.
True connoisseurs can get a whiskey locker cabinet to store full bottles of booze. Prices start at $250, which includes priority reservations for spots at the 18-seats bar and a private bar cart with ice, glassware and mixers when you go in to drink. Bar Jackalope opens Sunday through Thursday, 9 PM-2AM (515 W 7th St.; 213-614-0736).
