Saturday was a good day to be a hot dog fan. The unmistakable scent of char-grilled franks swirled through the Headhouse Shambles and spilled out towards South Street and Society Hill as 20 restaurants competed to win the third annual Dog Days of Summer cook-off.
After the smoke cleared, Headhouse Crab & Oyster Co. took the top spot, a totally deserved win. Chef Mike Stollenwerk’s crab-topped dog with spicy pepper relish hit the spot — the combo really belongs in the modern surf ‘n’ turf canon. It’s available at the restaurant now if you want to try it yourself.
Second place went to the Sichuan chile-dressed pork dog from Misconduct Tavern and bronze went to event organizer Hot Diggity, which presented a Sabrett frank topped with bacon and fire-roasted corn salsa. The People's Choice winner was Bistro Romano, with a pancetta-wrapped dog topped with duck ragu.
