Is Vegan BBQ Better Than Meaty BBQ?

Remember the vegan Frito pie on Franklin Barbecue’s opening menu? It was beloved but quickly nixed to make room for more brisket. But turns out that meat master Aaron Franklin was onto something.

Now places like BBQ Revolution are cooking up vegan versions of Texas’ favorite food, using ingredients like tempeh and seitan to approximate chopped beef sandwiches, as well as home-style sides like mac and cheese. Even outside Austin, places like Portland’s Homegrown Smoker serve smoky offerings to their vegan customers.
