Much ado has been made about brunch, but where is the love for lupper? Also known as linner, it's the meal in between lunch and dinner, and it is not always easy to find. Look through these recommendations for eight places that will satisfy your hunger between 3-5 PM, and feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments.

Zuni Café

The food world mourns last week's untimely passing of Zuni's Judy Rodgers, and this is still the most fitting place to celebrate her life's passion. The afternoon menu begins at 2:45 and includes the Zuni essentials such as the hamburger on focaccia and Rodgers' legendary roast chicken for two with warm bread salad (which takes about an hour to prepare).

1658 Market St., San Francisco; 415-552-2522

Lupper in the Castro is lively thanks to Starbelly, which offers an abbreviated menu. The restaurant's addictive calling cards like the Starbelly bacon pizza and hamburger are highlights.

3583 16th St., San Francisco; 415-252-7500

Park Chow

Climb up to the heated faux outdoor patio or cuddle by the indoor fireplace to order from the full menu. Park Chow specializes in American comfort food, including burgers, pastas and sinful desserts.

1240 Ninth Ave., San Francisco; 415-665-9912

Magnolia Gastropub and Brewery

If you're hanging in the Haight and need a good beer and lupper, consider stopping at this popular place during the hours when it's much more comfortable. Make a meal out of hearty fare like housemade sausages and a lamb meatball sandwich.

1398 Haight St., San Francisco; 415-864-7468

Presidio Social Club

The parlor feel of this tucked-away restaurant offers a respite from the city. The bar menu is served in between lunch and dinner, with winter warmers like Gruyère cheese toast with tomato fondue dip.

563 Ruger St., San Francisco; 415-885-1888

Urban Tavern

The bar and lounge area of this Union Square restaurant offers much of the regular menu during the lupper zone. Options include fish 'n' chips, turkey burger, lamb sliders and the decadent "stackable" burger.

333 O'Farrell St., San Francisco; 415-923-4400

El Techo de Lolinda

This rooftop gem opens at 4 PM with the full menu starting at that time; this means big plates of chicharrones, empanadas and more. There's also a new happy hour weekdays from 4-6 PM featuring specials on food and drinks.

2518 Mission St., San Francisco; 415-550-6970

Hit up the Oakland waterfront for the "In Between menu" served from 4-5 PM. Enjoy happy-hour cocktail prices and order from the salad and raw bar portion of the menu, which includes dishes such as lobster and white shrimp ceviche, Dungeness crab deviled eggs and oysters on the half shell.

55 Webster St., Oakland; 510-444-1233
