Summer is starting to sizzle in Houston and so is the restaurant scene. You can look forward to hot new options from big-name local chefs, international favorites making their Houston debut and burger joints with cult followings. 

Hopdoddy Burger Bar
Opening date: June 2
We’re salivating in anticipation of this Austin-based burgers-and-beers spot, opening this week in the glossy, newly minted River Oaks District. Guests wait hours in line in the Texas heat to snag one of these juicy creations made with a variety of patties (beef, bison, lamb, chicken, turkey, tuna and black bean) and toppings. Pair the burgers with a side of Kennebec truffle fries and a craft beer.

Opening date: July
The international Hakkasan Group brings its much acclaimed upscale chain (four locations in India, one in London) to the Houston Galleria. The modern teahouse will feature a dim sum menu of dumplings, soups, noodles and rice dishes, meat and seafood entrees, and a gorgeous array of homemade French pastries. Expect a sophisticated space with a cocktail bar, a dim sum bar (no rolling carts) and a large terrace.

Liberty Kitchen at The Treehouse
Opening date: Late summer
Houston-based F.E.E.D TX Restaurant group (Liberty Kitchen and Oysterette) is expanding outside the loop to Memorial City with another outpost of its popular concept specializing in seafood and Texas eats. Its stunning setting in the MetroNational office building will feature a two-story glass “treehouse” and a spacious rooftop patio.

Opening date (correction): Fall 2016
Austin’s beloved taco shop, known for scratch-made ingredients and zippy service, is headed to burgeoning Washington Avenue. Much of the food is locally sourced and organic, and the menu includes plenty of vegetarian and vegan offerings — absolutely a welcome addition to H-town.

Cane Rosso Pizza
Opening date: Mid-summer
This Dallas-based pizzeria will bring its wood-fired Neapolitan pies to Houston starting with this location in the Heights. Pizzas will be prepared by certified Master Pizzaiolo chef Dino Santonicola in a dramatic gold dome oven. The menu also includes starters, sandwiches and homemade pastas. A Montrose location is in the planning stage.

Steel City Pops
Opening date: August
Sweet news: Wildly popular Alabama-based Steel City Pops is coming to the Heights this summer. The organic popsicles are made from locally sourced ingredients in unique flavor combos like maple bacon with bourbon and gingerbread cream cheese. We hear they're addictive!

Steak 48
Opening date: Early June
Phoenix’s Steak 44 is opening this steak concept in the River Oaks district any day now. The upscale menu includes steaks, seafood and a raw bar, as well as a few items that are specific to Texas. The posh, two-story space will incorporate a glassed-in kitchen, an in-house butcher area for prepping the wet-aged steaks, a cocktail lounge and a small sidewalk patio.

Killen’s Burgers
Opening date: Early June
This retro-styled Pearland burger joint from chef-owner Ronnie Killen sports inside booths, a bar and an outdoor pavilion. The kitchen will flip huge burgers of USDA prime chuck, classic flat top-griddled cheeseburgers, fried chicken burgers and more. Other goodies: crinkly fresh-cut fries, onion rings, shakes, craft beer and a special homemade burger sauce.

Opening date: Summer
The team behind Helen Greek Food & Wine is planning a new concept in the Heights. Anticipate a concise menu of hearty Northeastern Italian-American fare for lunch and dinner, plus a design that evokes the Bronx's famed Little Italy.

From Lombardi Family Concepts (Toulouse Café & Bar), this rustic-chic restaurant in the River Oaks District shopping complex will offer hearty Northern Italian fare like pasta with meatballs, pan-seared sea bass and signature risotto. Expect weekend brunch and a cozy patio.
