Sancho Pistola’s: Taco Exchange
Get your surf ‘n’ turf in taco form as chef Adan Trinidad hosts Artt Ward of Smokin’ Betty’s at his Fishtown cantina. On the seafood side is a taco with tempura rock shrimp and pineapple kimchi, on the meat front you get braised short rib with refried black beans and avocado. The duo is available from 9 PM-midnight.
Izumi: Sushi Class
If you act fast, you might be able to score one of the limited seats to chef-owner Corey Baver’s maki-making dinner on East Passyunk. At 7 PM, 20 guests will sit down for sake sangria and hors d’oeuvres, before rolling up their sleeves to get interactive with nori, rice and raw fish. Spots are $50 per person, and you’re welcome to BYO (215-271-1222).
Cheu Noodle Bar: Ramen Rumble
The third battle of the bowls is on at Ben Puchowitz and Shawn Darragh’s Wash West hot spot. Eli Collins (Pub & Kitchen) and Justin Petruce (Petruce et al) will be slinging noodles, and for $25 you get a mini bowl of ramen from each chef, plus a beer, plus the right to vote for whichever one you think is better. Broth starts pouring at 6 PM; reservations are not available.
Primo Hoagies South Street: Vets Eat Free
In honor of National Hot Dog Month, veterans are being treated to free sausage sandwiches from 1-4 PM at this South Street sandwich spot. If you have served, just show up and chow down. (If you haven’t but know someone, please help spread the word.)
Jet Wine Bar: Iberian Wine Tasting
Explore five vintages from Spain and Portugal along with a light snack for $25 (tickets here) from 6:30-8:30 PM at Jill Weber’s South Street West wine bar. Stay afterward for a drink or dinner and get 15% off your tab for the night.
Jose Pistola’s: Taco Fundraiser
The second floor of this Center City Mexican is hosting a benefit for Jose Garces’ nonprofit that provides resources to Latinos in the Philly restaurant community. Starting at 7 PM, $25 gets you a pair of tacos and two brews. Sip pints for $5 throughout the night; all proceeds benefit the foundation.
Russet: Paleo Dinner Cookout
Philly CowShare is providing grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork for this all-night backyard patio event at the Center City BYO, and chef-owner Andrew Wood will cook all four courses over an open fire. Look for grilled beef heart, Tuscan sausage and roasted beef shoulder, yours for $35 per person. Reservations are recommended (215-546-1521).
Paradiso: Honeybee Dinner
More than 200,000 bees live in the roof garden atop Lynn Rinaldi’s East Passyunk spot, and she’ll feature their honey in all five courses of a 7 PM feast co-hosted with Philadelphia Bee Co.’s Don Shump. Seats are $65; call 215-271-2066 to reserve your spot.
Circles: Thai Taqueria Knife Fight
To decide whether chef-owner Alex Boonphaya or his sous chef Silvestre Rincon will wear the title of executive chef at their forthcoming South Street venture (read more here), they’re hosting a dinner battle at the Northern Liberties BYO at 6:30 PM. For $40, guests will eat six courses of Thai-Mexican hybrid food, then vote on which ones they like best. The cook with the most points wins the exec spot. Call 267-687-1309 to reserve.
Red Owl Tavern: Christmas in July
A special keg of winter favorite Troegs Mad Elf is ready to be tapped at this Hotel Monaco dining room, and the cherry Belgian ale will be available all evening for $9, until the beer runs out. Warm weather and one of Troegs’ finest? Best of both worlds.
Bierstube: Farmers’ Cabinet Tribute
The multiple bars of Matt Swartz are all currently closed due to his myriad of legal troubles, and many talented hospitality folk find themselves not only without a job, but lacking back pay. From 6-9 PM, Michael Naessens is hosting a benefit for Community Legal Services at his Old City beer hall. Per The Insider, if you print out an “affidavit of substituted service” and donate $3, you’ll get a free(-ish) drink. The funds will be used to help workers get their due.
South Street Hot Dog Crawl
There aren’t too many details available yet, but if you want to celebrate National Hot Dog Month the best way possible (by eating lots of franks), meet up with other enthusiasts at noon at O’Neals Pub, where you’ll begin a crawl along the strip, snacking on tubemeat as you go.
Bar Ferdinand: Paella Cooking Class
Check out David Ansill’s pan skills as he creates a huge skillet of this classic Spanish summer dish in front of your eyes outside the tapas bar on Liberties Walk. East Passyunk Car Show
More than 140 cars, trucks, motorcycles and all kinds of antique or novel autos will be lined up on the South Philly strip from noon-5 PM for the ninth annual edition of this motor fest. A dozen area restaurants and bars will be offering specials and 10 food trucks will be vending on the street. Expect live music, family fun and awards for the best cars. Admission is free.
