When it comes to Italian restaurant openings, we’re experiencing quite the abbondanza.
Next week, Osteria Morini - an offshoot of famed New York chef Michael White’s original in Soho - opens Tuesday in a renovated section of The Yards development. Heading the kitchen locally is chef Matt Adler, who previously cooked at Osteria Morini Soho, Marea and Ai Fiori, will carry out White’s Emilia-Romana-inspired concept (301 Water St. SE, Suite 109; 202-484-0660).
The menu will feature such housemade pastas as tagliatelle with ragu antica, casarecce with clams, leeks and Calabrian chiles, and truffled ricotta ravioli with melted butter and prosciutto. Desserts are the creation of Alex Levin, who worked at Jean-Georges Restaurants and Café Boulud before joining Altamarea Group, which owns Osteria Morini. At least 10 flavors of granite and gelati will be available daily in addition to composed desserts.
Today also brought the announcement that Alba Osteria, the latest from Al Dente restaurateur Hakan Ilhan, begins serving diners Dec. 15. The 226-seat restaurant will showcase dishes from executive chef Roberto Donna’s native region of Piedmont, Italy, with chef Amy Brandwein serving as chef de cuisine. Brandwein formerly worked under Donna as executive chef of the now-shuttered Galileo.
In addition to the salumi, cheeses, housemade pastas and family-style Piemontese dishes, an 8,000 pound wood-fired pizza oven will cook Neapolitan pies (425 I St. NW; 202-733-4454).
