Proper Food hit First and Mission Streets downtown on Monday, May 12. The new fast-casual shop sells grab-and-go fare for breakfast and lunch, all made daily from scratch. The usual California elements of seasonal and local are in play from executive chef Juan Munoz, who brings kitchen skills honed at The Plant Café, Balboa Café and Campton Place to the table.
For lunch, we like the sound of a "Proper PB&J" ($6.95) with bananas, housemade coconut peanut butter and jam on walnut bread, or for breakfast, a maple turkey sausage sandwich ($7.50) of house turkey maple fennel sausage loaded with white cheddar, free-range eggs, organic spinach, and lemon aioli. There are snacks like housemade cookies, chips, dried fruits and energy bars and custom juices like a Detox juice, blending apple, celery and broccoli. Vibrant salads go beyond the usual tired spring mix to things like grilled octopus and garbanzo ($12.50) tossed with frisee, peppers and croutons in a lemon vinaigrette. In bright orange and white colors, the 600 square-foot storefront is set to target the weekday, downtown crowd. If you work nearby, this could be a great alternative to your usual Tender Greens salad and Specialty's cookie. 100 First Street (entrance on Mission), 415-992-6781
