Chip Roman is a chef on the rise. In addition to the successful trio of restaurants he owns or co-owns (Blackfish, Mica and Ela), he just launched chocolatier Tradestone Confections and opened the connected Tradestone Cafe in Conshohocken.
Now, we’re hearing he’s involved in a project in Center City. The restaurant space in question is at 231 S. 15th Street, just north of locust in the Aria Condominiums. For a couple of years it was Tietra, a non-remarkable Italian-Mediterranean, but as of right now the doors are closed and there is brown paper over the windows.
Our source tells us Roman is partnering with former Tietra proprietor Victor Fellus, who also owns Mixto and Mix Pizzeria & Bar, and that neither concept nor chef for the new restaurant have been formalized. Whatever comes will be “hip and modern,” suitable for the location, which is smack in the middle of downtown.
The immediate area is lacking in chef-driven destinations - with the exception of Good Dog Bar and Jose Pistola’s, most restaurants on 15th Street are chains (Ocean Prime, Fado, Max Brenner, Del Frisco’s, Fox and Hound) - so a Roman-led venture could fill that niche nicely.
Chip Roman’s office did not return our request for comment.
