This weekend, the finalists for Tales of the Cocktail® 8th Annual Spirited Awards® - a sort of Oscars for the spirits and cocktail world - were announced, recognizing the year’s best bars, bartenders, writers, experts and internationally. (Zagat's own Virginia Miller is one of the international group of judges who decide on the winners.) The top four finalists in each category will be announced Friday, June 6, and invited to be guests at the live awards ceremony held on July 19th in New Orleans, La. The surrounding week, affectionately dubbed "Tales," means a swarm of festivities, seminars and events that everyone who's anyone in the cocktail world will lead and attend.

Bay Area-based finalists and bars are listed below along with a few nominees who initially made their mark in San Francisco but have gone on to take their expertise to other cities, like Brooke Arthur (formerly of Wo Hing General Store and Range) in the Best American Brand Ambassador category and San Diego-based Erick Castro (who opened Rickhouse) in the American Bartender of the Year category.
