The Price: $11
Tasting Notes: Up until recently, Decatur's excellent restaurant Cakes & Ale wasn't open for brunch, satisfying those seeking weekend AM food only with its adjacent cafe/bakery. Even though it's been a few months since the restaurant introduced a full weekend service, brunch hasn't quite caught on at Cakes & Ale as it should, particularly considering its attractive and sunny interior, the city's love of breakfast and many-times-Beard-nominated chef Billy Allin's food. A meal this weekend, for instance, didn't hit a bad note, but the star was this starter of lightly cooked and chilled rock shrimp, sweet and plump and refreshing. Tossed in a light dressing laced with dill and other herbs, and served on a griddled and split piece of brioche bread, it was a dish worth waking up early for. This past Sunday was the first day to feature the rock shrimp salad on Cakes & Ale's ever-changing menu, but hopes are it'll be available for a good while — try it if you can.
