Cakes & Ale chef Billy Allin gave Atlanta a New Year's present two weeks ago when he expanded the restaurant's offerings to include a Sunday brunch. The Café at Cakes & Ale is one of downtown Decatur's finer weekday spots to stop in and grab a snack to go or to enjoy a morning bite, but the closed table-service section of the restaurant proper always taunted brunchers wandering Decatur Square, on the hunt for Sunday eatings. No more worries, no more tugging on a locked door. Some familiar items from the Café's breakfast menu are available; the C&A Breakfast Sandwich is pleasingly straightforward combination of ham, a farm egg, scallions and fontina cheese served on a toasted English muffin, while croque monsieurs and madames should please those who prefer their sandwiches open faced. Airy omelets incorporate seasonal, regionally sourced vegetables - a recent one featured earthy mushrooms and feta with a particularly briny punch. Brunch runs from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, and reservations are available for parties larger than four; otherwise aim to show up early and get your name on the list, or grab a snack and a cup of coffee from the Café next door, which opens at 9 AM.
