4 New Bars in East Austin

By Megan Giller  |  April 21, 2015

Tired of the same old East Austin standbys? We still think they’re pretty cool, but sometimes a change of scenery is in order. Fortunately four new places have just opened their doors to keep you up to your fedora in craft cocktails.

Independence Brewing Co.
Go way east and way south for way fun: the microbrewery has just redone its tasting room and extended the hours. Check out its award-winning brews like Independence Pale Ale and Convict Hill Stout.

Named after the cult teen-angst book The Outsiders, this East Cesar Chavez spot from alums of the White Horse and Hole in the Wall is more than happy to serve you a craft cocktail. Also check out grilled cheese from the Toaster truck out back.

A wraparound porch. Big murals. A back patio. And cocktails, wine and beer. The East Cesar Chavez hot spot has it all, even though it just opened in April. As its motto says, “If you shake it, they will come.”

Hip things are happening a bit north too. The bicycle-themed bar on East MLK has a big patio with picnic tables so you can hang out for the evening over cocktails and a daily whiskey special.
