Austin's 10 Most Anticipated Summer Openings

In the next few months, an all-star cast from restaurants like Uchi and Uchiko, Black’s Barbecue, Kenichi and more will bring some tasty food to our town. From pizzas and fresh-baked bread to Sichuan takeout and barbecue, this summer promises to be yummy.

  • St. Philip  

    Who: The team behind Uchi and Uchiko, with director of culinary operations Philip Speer at the helm
    What: Pizzas, sandwiches, fresh-baked breads and pastries
    When: Toward the end of the summer
    Where: Sunset Valley, at 4715 S. Lamar

  • Launderette and Angry Bear

    Who: Chefs Rene Ortiz and Laura Sawicki (both formerly at La Condesa and Sway)
    What: A neighborhood cafe and grocery, with a small Sichuan Chinese to-go area (i.e., Angry Bear)
    When: Late 2014
    Where: 2115 Holly St.

  • Black’s Barbecue

    Who: Lockhart’s famous Black’s Barbecue is finally opening an Austin outpost
    What: Brisket, beef sausage, ribs and killer sides
    When: Sometime this summer
    Where: Guadalupe and 31st St., next to Hopfield’s

  • Cuvee Coffee

    Who: Local roaster Cuvee Coffee, which provides beans to some of the best shops in Austin
    What: The roaster is opening its first retail store, with a small, rotating menu featuring a variety of blends as well as 12 taps of craft beer, cold brew and a small locally catered food menu
    When: Late summer
    Where: 2000 E. Sixth St.

  • Dai Due  

    Who: Chef Jesse Griffiths and his team
    What: The all-local supper club and butcher shop is moving from the farmer's market and select events into a brick and mortar, where they’ll serve a daily three-course prix fixe menu with grilled meats, vegetables and fermented items, as well as breakfast and lunch items like tacos and raw steak and eggs
    When: July
    Where: 2406 Manor Rd.

  • Olamaie 

    Who: Chefs Michael Fojtasek and Grae Nonas (one of our 2014 Austin 30 Under 30 honorees), plus GM Ben Hickerson 
    What: Modern South cuisine like marbled eggplant with white barbecue sauce, which they previewed at a series of pop-ups last summer and fall
    When: They’re saying ASAP, but the restaurant has been delayed for almost a year
    Where: 1610 San Antonio St.

  • Terry Black’s Barbecue

    Who: Black’s Barbecue in Lockhart is run by Kent Black, but his nephews, Mike and Mark, will open this new space. It's named after their father, Terry Black.
    What: Texas barbecue in all its glory, with new-school recipes
    When: Late May
    Where: 1003 Barton Springs Rd.

    Who: Former Kenichi chef Shane Stark and Gulf Coast fishmonger Roberto San Miguel
    What: Fresh, local seafood to eat in or take home
    When: Late summer

    Who: Chef Stephen Shallcross and designer Mickie Spencer
    What: A New Orleans diner with a midcentury-modern aesthetic

    Who: Co-owner Jack Wilson is an Austin musician who apprenticed at Seattle’s Victrola Coffee Roasters
    What: A specialty espresso shop and craft beer bar, with live music as well as a new Veracruz All Natural trailer and other local eats
