Best Thing We Ate This Weekend: Chilangos at La Condesa
This Sunday’s brunch at La Condesa was one of those perfect meals we’ll be dreaming about for a long time. At about 1:00 we waltzed into the trendy downtown restaurant and were seated immediately (no waits! in Austin!). In fact, everything was so tasty that it’s hard to pick a favorite. The huevos Condesa, with tender rotisserie chicken, duck-fat-braised potatoes, grilled onions, bacon, fresh spinach and poblano rajas under two fried eggs had us at “duck fat.”
But it was the Chilangos that surprised us into licking our plate: the quinoa croquette provided a nice textural base for the creamy poached eggs covered in salsa verde, and the wild boar chorizo added a kick of spice that the fresh arugula tempered. The bold flavors and fun atmosphere reminded us that we were in chef Rene Ortiz’s kitchen. We finished off our day of decadence with the Boca Negra for dessert, a flourless chocolate cake not unlike a soufflé with a hint of chile de arbol and ancho, topped with caramelized banana slices and brown-sugar-banana ice cream.
