Black’s BBQ to Open in AustinBy Megan Giller

That’s right, Austin. Black's, the famous Lockhart outpost, has just officially announced that they are planning to open a storefront at Guadalupe and 31st, next to Hopfield’s. The Blacks own the oldest family-owned barbecue joint in the state, and starting sometime in the summer, they will bring that ‘cue to Central Austin.
Owner and pitmaster Kent Black told us that they plan to smoke the meat in their ancient brick pit and then bring the finished product into Austin to sell. Black says he’s excited about being neighbors with Hopfield’s and that Austinites will now be able to get great craft beer and craft barbecue in one street block.
Now, some of you are probably thinking, “Isn’t Black’s already opening in Austin, on Barton Springs?” That would be Kent’s brother Terry and his sons, Mark and Michael. Their operation, called Terry Black's BBQ, is completely separate from the trademarked Black’s BBQ, and they’ll be using their own recipes rather than the family’s fourth-generation ones.
Regardless, we’re excited for the choices in town. Whereas 10 years ago you had to drive outside the city proper to find good ‘cue, today Austin is a treasure trove of brisket, sausage, ribs and more. Think our list of top barbecue restaurants needs an update? Take our survey and let us know!
