Foodie Explorer: Sarah’s Mediterranean Grill

Austinites love to explore, almost as much as they love to eat. This is our attempt to combine the two by uncovering some under-the-radar ethnic eateries and places that you wouldn’t otherwise know existed. Today’s destination: Sarah’s Mediterranean Grill and Market in Allandale (5222 Burnet Rd.; 512-419-7605)

Go for: an authentic Mediterranean cafe and market

You’ll probably spend: About $10 on food, $20 on groceries

You’ll be comfortable in: Jeans and a T-shirt, the way Austin intended

Don’t be intimidated by: Foreign labels on packaged products; they’re all delicious (be sure to try all the candies and sweets)

Must-try dishes: Try hummus and tzatziki with pita bread to start, spinach pie or a beef shawarma wrap. Or go for one of the plates (we like the chicken kebab) with hummus, Mediterranean rice, a small house salad and pita bread. Don’t skip the baklava for dessert.

Know before you go: The cafe has an eat-in area, but it feels more like a to-go establishment

Side note: It's one of the only places in town to serve halal meat
