The Ultimate Super Bowl Takeout Guide

Let's be honest - one of the best parts of Super Bowl Sunday is the food. Elevate your party with game-day eats from these restaurant MVPs. No matter what part of town you live in, there’s great takeout to be inhaled, from wings and fried chicken to nontraditional options like sushi.

  • Campus

Freedmen’s smokes some serious barbecue, and lucky for you, it’s available by the pound for your party. Go for brisket, spare ribs, pulled pork or housemade sausage, plus sides like German potatoes, grilled cabbage slaw and pit chili (which, honestly, is a meal on its own). Order by Friday by calling 512-220-0953 or e-mailing freedmensinfo@gmail.com and pick up as early as noon on Sunday.

  • East Austin

Just because you have a mustache doesn’t mean you don’t like football. Hit up East Side Pies for some game-day pizza, but make sure you place big-delivery orders 48 hours in advance. Hefty grilled sandwiches at Austin Daily Press with themed names like the Who Dat (mortadella, Black Forest ham, capicola, olive salad, provolone and aïoli) are also always a good choice, as are the Blue Balls (fried blueberry banana bread with vanilla glaze) for dessert. They’ll be taking orders through Sunday, but for big parties make sure you preorder by Friday.

  • Rosedale and Allandale

Nothing’s better than a bucket of fried chicken, and Lucy’s can make your dreams come true. They’re also offering seven-layer dip with housemade tortilla chips, cheese-stuffed pickled jalapeño poppers and deep-fried stuffed mushrooms as Super Bowl specials. Order as late as Sunday for takeout (not delivery), but be advised that they’re not doing orders for big parties (think 40 people, for example).

  • Downtown

Who says the Super Bowl has to be all about wings and pizza? Take a break from the norm with Sushi Zushi and eat salmon nigiri as well as signature rolls all day. The locale recommends placing big orders by Saturday; otherwise ordering that day should be fine, as long as you factor in an hour to an hour-and-a-half for delivery and/or pick-up time.

  • South Austin (78704)

If you’re going for pizza, go all the way with Home Slice. Their menu will stay the same for the big day, but given how slammed they usually are, it’s a good idea to order in advance. They’re already taking preorders now, so call in immediately if not sooner for big parties. The hot spot says they’re taking orders on Sunday as well, but they will be limited as far as times go. As usual, it’s all pickup, no delivery.

  • Way South Austin

Celebrate the Super Bowl with some down-home Southern food with a local, organic twist. Down in Oak Hill, Jack Allen’s Kitchen is offering their entire menu to go. The bacon-wrapped Texas quail, chile-mango shrimp tacos and chicken-fried beef ribs will add some character to your party.

  • North Austin

Pluckers has already been taking preorders for pickup for a week, but they say that there’s still time to get yours in. We recommend an assortment of sauces, from the mild Ranch to their excruciating Fire in the Hole, as well as fried pickles, fried cheese, chips and queso and any other half-time snacks your little cholesterol-laden heart desires.

  • Round Rock and Pflugerville

Prove that life is just as quirky up north by ordering from Austin sub shop Thundercloud Subs. Get a party tray for around $70 or go for the CloudBurst Giant Sub, a giant loaded sandwich that’s several feet long and as wide as two regular buns. Just make sure you order by Saturday.

    All Over Austin

If you want food delivered from any restaurant open on game day, check out the new Austin iPhone app called Favor. It bills itself as “your on-demand personalized delivery assistant,” and through it a delivery person will order your meal, pick it up and deliver it to you while you track their progress. Carrot cake French toast at South Congress Cafe or a burger from Hopdoddy - all can be had from the comfort of your home.
