7 New Burgers Around Boston

By Scott Kearnan  |  October 18, 2013

It's Burger Week here at Zagat, a tribute to the best, most creative and occasionally sloppiest sandwiches around the city. Though Boston has plenty of restaurants with reliably awesome burgers, we've also tracked down some of the newest selections gracing menus in town. If you're looking for the latest permutations of patties we love to gobble, feast your eyes on these.

  • Pan Seared Burger at GEM Italian Kitchen

Last month the Downtown restaurant-cum-night spot reinvented its culinary approach: moving from "American tapas" to an "Italian kitchen" concept. Among the new additions is the Pan Seared Burger, which boosts up the all-American burger: the grass-fed beef comes topped with fresh pecorino and onion marmalade, with a side of Tuscan fries (617-482-1213).

  • Barrio Burger at Barrio

Ok, we have to qualify this one: the Barrio Burger at chef Michael Schlow's cantina itself isn't new, but the recent addition of burgers to the lunch menu is. Now, midday office and Sox game crowds can bite into the juicy burger topped with Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, bacon and jalapeño. It's served with a side of chipotle fries (857-753-4100).

  • Finch Burger at Finch

Chef Caleb Graber-Smith launches his restaurant's eponymous Finch Burger this week. The beef burger is topped with melted Gruyère and two housemade toppings, cremini mushroom marmalade and housemade garlic aïoli. The kettle chips lend a nice, salty crunch (617-624-0202).

  • Pilgrim Burger at Foundry on Elm

Too early to be thinking about Thanksgiving? Not at this Somerville saloon-meets-bistro, which just added its Pilgrim Burger: a patty of ground turkey topped with roasted winter squash, cranberry relish and Vermont cheddar. We are prepared to show our humble, gluttonous gratitude (617-628-9999).

  • Sunday Special at Rialto

Rialto always offers a solid burger on its bar menu, but every Sunday it switches things up: prices go down (to $10), and creativity gets amped up. Though each Sunday's rotating toppings are typically a chef's-whim-style surprise, Rialto tells us you can expect the Liberty Burger to make an appearance for Sunday, October 27. That variation comes with stracciatella cheese, caramelized sauerkraut (aka "liberty cabbage"), mustard greens and aïoli (617-661-5050).

  • Salmon Burger at Towne Stove & Spirits

With chef Mark Allen newly at the helm, Towne has turned out quite a few changes to its menu over the last two months. We suggest swimming by to check out the fresh salmon burger with pancetta, pickled onion and lemon aïoli (617-247-0400).

  • Lamb Burger at Local 149

The South Boston neighborhood joint has an elevated tavern-style menu with a knockout rotating lamb burger. The preparation changes weekly, and popular permutations include various feta-based toppings and the selection shown here: crispy onions, Great Hill blue cheese and housemade buffalo sauce on an English muffin (617-269-0900).
