Church Welcomes New ChefBy Scott Kearnan

Put on your Sunday best: Church has a new chef. Now leading the congregation - sorry, kitchen - is Patrick Spencer. The new toque has honed his skills in more than a few kitchens: though he jumped into the biz via his family's pizza shop, he went on to work at Riva in Scituate, All Star Sandwich Bar in Cambridge, East Coast Grill (where he served as Chris Schlesinger's sous-chef), and then Blackstrap BBQ in Winthrop. (So: creative sandwiches, southern comfort, Caribbean flair? Check, check, check.) He most recently expanded his seafood skills at Union Fish, before moving to fellow Dramshop Hospitality spot Church, where he's looking to stay true to its original mission of "upscale comfort food with a twist." His new menu includes starters like duck liver mousse, cauliflower soup and poutine; entrees such as Portuguese-style cod and fried chicken with jalapeño hush puppies; crab and chorizo sliders and a BBQ pulled pork flatbread pizza. Next up: a drink list highlighting bourbons and whiskeys. Glory be (617-236-7600).
