Loretta's Last Call Gets Called Out?

Those looking for Southern food near Fenway were eager to welcome Loretta's Last Call, which opened at the end of June in the space that formerly housed Ken Oringer's La Verdad; head here to check out our earlier report on the place. But we couldn't help but notice that this latest entrant from the Lyons Group (the hospitality team that's also behind Back Bay Social Club, Sonsie and more) seemed to score a little shade on social media.

Last week, Top Chef runner-up Tiffani Faison shared a tweet about the Loretta's menu: "I'll just say I'm flattered, and leave it at that," wrote the chef, who owns Sweet Cheeks Q just three blocks away. Her photo zeroed in on hushpuppies and fried green tomatoes, items which also appear on her menu. Also last week, food critic MC Slim JB (one of our must-follow social media stars) shared via Facebook an Improper Bostonian article about Loretta's. It elicited a comment from Barry Maiden, chef at the well-regarded Southern restaurant Hungry Mother, that seemed... skeptical. "Vermont chef brings authenticity to Southern menu? A trip to Nashville you say? It looks more like someone just came to Cambridge then copy and pasted the menu when they got back," wrote Maiden. "Something smells like horse sh#%. Can't wait to try it."
