Calexico is a real place - it’s a California border crossing town on the edge of Mexico. However, the name is probably better known as the ultrapopular Cal-Mex micro-chain, which has three food carts and four restaurants throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Philadelphia Real Estate Blog broke the news today that Calexico is planning to open its first branch outside NYC, on South Street West in Philadelphia.
Not many details are available on the Philly Calexico, except that it will have a liquor license and most likely serve the same slate of tacos and burritos that have gained it a cult following 90 miles north. It’s going into a new, mixed-use development at 1600 South Street. That’s just down the block from where Pumpkin Market just shuttered due to a 65% increase in rent, but it appears that for New York restaurateurs, the prices are still right. A fall opening is targeted.
