Touching food with your bare hands is now illegal in California if you're a cook or food handler in a kitchen. All restaurant operators must wear gloves when handling ready-to-eat foods due to a change in the retail food code effective January 1. Other states already have this policy in place but this begs the bigger question: Is a glove really cleaner than a bare hand (that you can wash)? Stay tuned for some chef reaction on the new ban next week. [NPR]

Disgraced former Food Network star Paula Deen will appear at the upcoming South Beach Wine and Food Festival at the end of February. Food Network Gossip notices "The Deen Family" on the schedule for the Grand Tasting Village on Sunday at 4:15 PM (one of the final slots of the entire fest) although her appearance is not advertised on the website. Shaaa-dy. Interesting considering Food Network is the title sponsor of the fest. [FNG]

Big-ticket restaurant beat:

Grant Achatz's Next in Chicago has just released their trailer for the newest theme: Chicago Steak. You can check it out here.

Hollywoood's legendary Formosa Cafe (oft depicted in movies) is getting a new culinary program from the folks at Red Medicine.

And at Yountville's famed French Laundry, Thomas Keller has appointed Patrick Fahy the new pastry chef. [ISSF]
