10 Fall Donuts to Try Around Chicago

By Sarah Freeman  |  November 10, 2015

Pumpkin spice, apple cider and all of your favorite fall flavors are now conveniently being served in handheld donut form. Get them before they are replaced by the peppermint/gingerbread/cocoa variety.

Pumpkin Overlord at Do-Rite Donuts

New York City chef and restaurateur Andrew Carmellini designed the latest in Do-Rite’s collaboration series. His ode to fall (pictured above) is a pumpkin spice cake donut with apple brandy glaze, cream cheese frosting and spicy pumpkin seed brittle. It is available though November 19.

Pumpkin Spice Bomboloni at BomboBar

The seasonal special at this new West Loop walk-up window is, of course, pumpkin spice. The baseball-size cloud of fried dough is filled with a creamy pumpkin custard that makes you want to grab your most oversized sweater and frolic in some leaves.

Sourdough Bomboloni at Nico Osteria

Pastry chef Leigh Omilinsky offers an elevated take on the Italian donut with sourdough bomboloni garnished with butter-braised pineapple, butterscotch, black pepper and graham cracker gelato.

Squash Donut at Firecakes

Firecakes knows a thing or two about seasonal specials. From the ice cream–filled donut sandwich during the summer to this delicata squash cake donut covered in sour cream icing and black walnuts for fall, these are the ultimate in seasonal donuts.

Seedling Apple Cider Donut at Glazed & Infused

As far as essential fall eating goes, apple cider donuts are on the top of the list. While they are best enjoyed during a lazy afternoon picking apples, they can also be enjoyed at any of the local chain’s six Chicago locations.

Chai Dulce de Leche Donut at Pub Royale

This sweet and spicy pastry recently debuted on the brunch menu at this popular Wicker Park pub. It transforms bits of naan dough into dessert with the help of chai dulce de leche glaze (pictured above).

Miso-Caramel Donuts at Ramen-San

Ramen and donut might not seem like an obvious pairing, but the chefs at this River North noodle bar infuse a little Japanese flavor into the dessert by serving sugar-dusted donuts with miso-caramel crème.

Daily Donut at Off-Site-Bar

Every weekend the bar and patio adjacent to Longman & Eagle turns into a pop-up donut shop with an ever-changing lineup of flavors, from ginger-glazed pumpkin to apple jelly, maple custard or caramelized apple filled.

Apple Cinnamon Donut Holes at Seven Lions

One of the newest additions to the brunch menu takes the shape of spiced apple-filled mini-donuts covered in cinnamon sugar glaze. Although not technically a donut, the menu also offers mini-éclairs filled with brown sugar custard and covered in salted caramel and bacon.

Chestnut Donuts at Doughnut Vault

Although these yeast donuts can be enjoyed year-round, the delicate maple and caramel flavor makes it the perfect accompaniment to a crisp fall day. They are served at the original Franklin Street location.
