Whether you're looking for late-night tacos and horchata milkshakes or are just looking to pick up some snacks to eat at home, Mercadito Counter has you covered. After months of delays, this new concept from the Mercadito team (Mercadito, Tavernita, Mercadito Fish and the coming-soon Tippling Hall) opens Monday in River North (Editor's note: The opening has been delayed until Tuesday or Wednesday).
Decorated with floral paintings, glass jars and dessert plants, the counter-service concept features Mexican-influenced twists on American classics — think hot dogs topped with mole barbecue sauce and jalapeno slaw, onion rings made with a chipotle batter and a short-rib burger with manchego cheese. The beverage program, curated by The Tippling Brothers, offers agua frescas in flavors like strawberry cinnamon and hibiscus-orange agua fresca as well as a variety of milkshakes. To-go options include the guacamole by the quart in addition to housemade tortillas, Mexican cheeses and spiced meats. There will also be rotating soups, all-day breakfast and weekly tamale specials.
