What to Drink This Weekend: Pappy Van Winkle

By Sarah Freeman  |  November 15, 2013

Turns out those lousy Pappy thieves didn’t get it all. Chicago’s shipment of the prized bourbon - widely regarded as some of the finest whiskey in the world - arrived in bars yesterday. But being the best comes with a price - a high price and high demand for a taste of the smooth stuff. Best enjoyed straight, this liquor is not easy to find. Here are seven of the lucky Chicago watering holes that received a Pappy Van Winkle shipment, usually limited to one bottle per year.

Charles Joly and the team are pouring flights in The Aviary and The Office. Drink down the line of the 10, 12, 15, 20 and 23-year, as well as the family reserve.

Bar Deville
This Ukrainian Village dive has the whole spread. A bottle of 10, 12, 15, 20 and 23-year arrived and is currently, although not for long, at home on the back bar.

So far the bar has opened a bottle of the 20-year Pappy Van Winkle and 10-year Old Rip 107. While you're there, try one of the other three hundred bottles of whiskey.

The Gage
The popular post-work hangout got a small shipment that is sure to be sloshed soon. It got bottles of the 15, 20 and 23-year Pappy Van Winkle along with one bottle of the 12-year special reserve.

Glunz Tavern
The 10, 12, 15, 20 and 23-year bourbons as well as the 13-year rye are available for sipping. Want your own bottle? The adjacent liquor store might just have a few available for retail.

This might be a gin bar, but that didn’t stop it from receiving five bottles of the bourbon. Its collection features the 15, 20 and 23-year as well as the 10-year Old Rip Van Winkle and 12-year special reserve.

The new restaurant inside the Langham Hotel got a shipment of old bottles. They received the 10-year Old Rip Van Winkle, 15 and 20-year Pappy Van Winkle as well as 12-year Van Winkle Special Reserve.
