Lucky Campbell Remixes Cocktail Menu at AbacusBy Farah Fleurima | November 20, 2013 By Farah Fleurima | November 20, 2013
Cocktail slinger Eddie “Lucky” Campbell is used to getting a lot of attention in local mixology circles. Formerly of Bolsa and The Chesterfield, Campbell has most recently pitched his tent at Uptown’s Abacus, debuting a number of new cocktails at the bar. Based on what’s been added to the menu, it’s clear he likes to remix throwback cocktails, literally. We tasted a heady selection that showed off his flair for updating the old school, including a ginger-basil gimlet that got a spicy bite from the addition of the freshly peeled root. The autumn-tastic Lotus Cloud stood out for its intense blackberry flavor and a whimsical St. Germain foam. A Yuzu Collins takes the old-fashioned drink and adds a dose of the Asian citrus, which must be a favorite of Lucky’s, because yuzu shows up in the Shinsei, a sexy martini with a generous addition of Chinese five spice and a hint of almond.
In addition to Lucky’s drinks, the lounge space at Abacus has added a small menu of bar bites, available Monday through Saturday from 5 to 10 PM. The restaurant’s famed lobster shooters are on the list, as are sumptuous glazed pork jowl steamed buns, available for a song. Between the grub and the liquid goodness from Lucky, looks like it’s time to make the Abacus bar a new hang.
