Govt. Shutdown Halts FDA Food Inspections

Wondering how the current goverment shutdown is affecting the food world? Politico reports that the routine inspections by the FDA have been halted as a result of the congressional paralysis. Federal meat inspectors are still working but just about everything else you find at the grocery store that falls under the FDA's domain has been affected by non-working inspectors. Also, most of the experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the group that identifies and tracks foodborne illnesses, have been told to stay home. Caroline Smith DeWaal, director of food safety at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, tells Politico that the safety of food will be compromised if an agreement is not met soon.
