7 Must-Try Holiday Cocktails in Houston

By Amber Ambrose  |  December 20, 2013

It's the Friday before Christmas: time to get festive! Get in the spirit by sipping on some seasonal spirits. From hot to cold, this list has everything you need to toast to a fantastic holiday season - just add friends, family and a little bit of cheer. Happy holidays from Zagat, and bottoms up!

  • Irish Chupacabras at The Original Ninfa's on Navigation

This peppy little number includes Jameson Irish whiskey, tequila blanco, Frangelico and chilled espresso as its base, with sugar cane, vanilla and a mole foam. It may leave you with the alcoholic equivalent to a milk mustache that would make Santa proud.

  • Wassail Punch at Rosemont Social Club

Warm yourself from the inside-out with this warm, spiced grog. It's made with bourbon, ginger, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg for a seasonal, Christmastime drink. Even if it's cold outside, the rooftop deck has plenty of warmers and a great view of Montrose.

    910 Westheimer Rd.; 832-530-4698

  • Rotterdam Falliday at Lowbrow

Drinking for charity is always something we can get behind, and part of the proceeds from this holiday cocktail go to one of our favorite nonprofits, The Orange Show for Visionary Art. The refreshing but complex drink is made with Deep Eddy vodka (one of the drink promotion's sponsors), an aromatic syrup made by Goro & Gun and fresh-squeezed lemon juice.

  • Texas Choco Mate Moonshine at Sparrow Cookshop + Bar

Instead of figgy pudding this year (who eats that anyway?), try one of Sparrow's seasonal cocktails - the Texas Choco Mate Moonshine. It's a mouthful to say and to drink with a muddled lemon wedge, Texas moonshine, cinnamon chocolate mate syrup, lemon and lime juices, soda and a garnish of sugar figs.

    3701 Travis St.; 713-524-6922

  • Spiced Pumpkin Cocoa at Backstreet Cafe

We've been waiting for someone to offer up some tasty spiked hot cocoa, and boy did Backstreet deliver. Not only is there actual roasted pumpkin (from scratch) in the drink to give it a creamier mouthfeel, but it's embellished with an '85 Jimenez sherry and topped with luscious house-made marshmallows. "Wow" is pretty much the only thing we can say about that.

    1103 South Shepherd Dr.; 713-521-2239

  • Algarrobina at Latin Bites

Save room for this liquid dessert that comes in the form of a cocktail at Latin Bites. The Peruvian spirit, pisco, is first infused with dried fruits and sugar cane and then combined with carob-tree syrup and condensed milk for a smooth, rich treat.

    5709 Woodway Dr.; 713-229-8369

  • Not to be Touched at Eleven XI

This delicately foamed cocktail is a creamier take on the mimosa with Champagne, fresh-squeezed orange juice and heavy cream. It's the adult version of a Dreamsicle and a perfect option to try at Eleven XI's Sunday brunch.
