Nothing says summer in England like fish 'n' chips, but there is more to this traditional comfort food than just artery-clogging grease. Here are some of our favourite London chippies — where the fish is fresh, the batter fried to a crisp and the extras keep you coming back for more. Prepare to be hooked!

  • The Fish Club
Fresh, sustainable fish ranging from the usual cod, haddock and plaice to more unusual rainbow trout or beer-battered halloumi cheese for vegetarians. Choose your fish from the wet counter and staff will recommend the best way to cook it. Opt for crispy sweet-potato chips — a healthy alternative to regular french fries.

    Various locations

  • Kerbisher & Malt
It's all about fresh, hand-prepared food at this modern take on a classic British fish 'n' chip shop. Haddock, cod, plaice, cooly or pollock can be ordered lightly battered or grilled. There's even a CCTV camera that screens the chefs at work in the kitchen so you can see your fish being battered and fried while you wait.

  • Poppies Fish & Chips
A retro-style fish 'n' chip shop complete with a jukebox, Formica-topped tables and Poppies newspaper to wrap your takeaway order. Fish from Billingsgate Market is dipped in golden batter and fried to a perfect crisp. Waitresses dressed in 1950s nautical dresses add to the charm.

    Various locations

  • Oliver's Fish & Chips
London's healthiest fish 'n' chip shop (surprising from the previous owner of Millie's cookies) uses pure rapeseed oil, responsibly sourced fish and British-grown Maris Piper potatoes. Each fish 'n' chip meal is under 500 kcalories, and on Wednesdays the North London chippie turns gluten-free with a special batter.

  • Sea Shell of Lisson Grove
This old favourite in Marylebone has been serving authentic fish 'n' chips for over 40 years. In addition to traditional battered fish — from lemon sole to skate, haddock, plaice or cod — they also do an excellent popcorn cod, which consists of bite-sized tender cod pieces deep-fried in crispy panko batter. There's also a bottomless supply of chips when ordered with a main course.

A family-run chippie in North London where the fish is fresh, sustainable and can even be traced back to the fishing vessel and how it was caught. They've been going strong since 1968. Don't miss the sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
