Best Thing We Ate

The 8 Best Things We Ate This Year (So Far) in London

By Malika Dalamal  |  June 30, 2014

We are over halfway through the year already, but we have a lot to show for it. New restaurants are popping up all over town, offering everything from comfort food to exciting new flavours and interesting takes on classic dishes. Here are eight of the best things we have eaten so far in 2014.

  • Kid Goat Methi Keema at Gymkhana

Why We Love It: An insanely flavourful serving of minced goat meat with fenugreek served with bread rolls to scoop it up. Add goat brains if you are feeling brave.

    42 Albemarle St., W1S 4JH; 020 3011 5900

  • Broad Bean Tempura With Wasabi Salt at Kurobuta

Why We Love It: Move over, edamame; we want to start every meal with these battered and fried beans sprinkled with wasabi salt for an extra kick.

    17-20 Kendal St., W2 2AW; 020 3475 4158

  • Homemade Sausage Roll at Barnyard

Why We Love It: The delicate flaky pastry of this sausage roll doesn't distract from the rich meaty flavour of the sausage, while the accompanying chutney complements it perfectly.

    18 Charlotte St., W1T 2LY; 020 7580 3842

  • Broken Eggs With Ricotta, Spinach and Pine Nuts at Granger and Co Clerkenwell

Why We Love It: Broken eggs (a cross between scrambled and an omelet) are served in a hot skillet with spinach and pine nuts. A final dollop of cool ricotta and a sprinkling of chile flakes provide a tasty contrast.

    50 Sekforde St., EC1R 0HA; 020 7251 9032

  • Crab Donuts at Chiltern Firehouse

Why We Love It: These bite-sized brioche buns filled with warm white crab meat are a worthy distraction from people-watching at André Balazs' hot new Marylebone restaurant.

    1 Chiltern St., W1U 7PA; 020 7073 7676

  • Tuna with Truffle-Infused Ponzu Jelly at Yashin Ocean

Why We Love It: A sublime dish of tuna carpaccio accompanied by a jellied ponzu sauce. Expect a burst of flavours with every bite.

    117-119 Old Brompton Rd., SW7 3RN; 020 7373 3990

  • Cornbread at The Lockhart

Why We Love It: This light and fluffy cornbread — slathered in honey butter — is served straight from the oven in an iron loaf tin. Slice it up and share it out — you could make an entire meal out of this hearty side dish.

    22-24 Seymour Pl., W1H 7NL; 020 3011 5400

  • Yellowtail Sashimi and Green-Chile Granita at Flesh & Buns

Why We Love It: Melt-in-your mouth yellowtail sashimi sits in a tangy soy and is topped with an unexpected icy green-chile granita. Each bite is light, fresh and simply the coolest way to eat the spicy-hot pepper.

    41 Earlham St., WC2H 9LX; 020 7632 9500
