Best Thing We Ate: Banana Sundae at Water Grill

We know we should be talking about the chilled seafood tower, oysters on the half shell and the whole fish specialties at the new Water Grill in Santa Monica, and not dessert. After all, it's always in the top five for seafood in the Los Angeles Restaurant Survey, and this year is no different. And it's not that dessert was the best part of the meal we recently had at the seafood haven, but it was the thing we couldn't stop eating...and eating...and eating. But what's not to love: a brownie shoved into a sundae glass, bottoming out like a treasure trove of rich chocolateyness under a layer of banana ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and...wait for it...chocolate-covered corn flakes. Those may be our new favorite thing, anywhere. It was a fantastic end to a fine meal at Water Grill.

Turning the former Ocean Avenue Seafood into a WG has to be a gold mine for the King Seafood Company. The front of the restaurant was blown out, so now huge open windows line the street looking out to the Pacific. The lighting is low, the decor nautically vintage; there are open tanks and whole fish on ice as if you're down on the docks picking out your dinner for the night. People pack the banquettes and bar tables for oysters, beer, fish and chips and cioppino. And we mean packed. We don't know if Ocean Avenue was quite this busy, but it is now. We admit to liking the Downtown location a tad more, maybe because it was the original. But Water Grill SM is a stunner, and we'd go in any time, even if it's just for dessert.
