Best Thing We Ate: Crab Green Curry at LA's Thai Fest

Back-to-back food festivals are a way of life for hard-working food writers, but when they’re as good as L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade on one day and the inaugural Thai Food Festival on another, we can’t complain. Jet Tila hosted the latter in front of Paramount Studios yesterday, with a collection of food from both his Thai Town and non-Thai friends cooking diverse and delicious dishes. Of course there was sweet-and-spicy pork from Jitlada, curry noodles from Tila, larb and other spicy meats from Lum Ka Naad, and Thai stir fry glass noodles from Andy Ricker of Portland’s Pok Pok. Chefs not participating were running around too, like Suzanne Tracht and Preech Narkthong from Jar, Jenn Louis from Portland's Lincoln, Curtis Stone and Evan Kleiman.

But walking away from the afternoon we couldn’t stop thinking about David LeFevre’s (MB Post) blue crab with green curry dish. The little bamboo boat had just enough sweet heat to it, with beautiful lump crab meat and fresh corn swimming in a dynamite green curry broth. Absolutely delicious. We can’t say the same for the durian we smelled (not a fan). The afternoon included Thai music, dancers and fruit carving, plus a tent with free massages, which we now think every food festival has to have.
